Today, beauty standards are inclusive of various ethnicities and sizes. This has not always been the case. This project primarily focuses on the beauty standards in the 1960s and how society slowly accepted the beauty of black women over time. This project aims to design two cohesive motion posters that illustrate the evolution of beauty standards.
I began this project by researching the beauty standards in the 1960s. The 60s had notable fashion models like Twiggy, a cultural British icon. I decided to use an image of her as the inspiration for the left poster. I experimented with Barbie doll images for the poster to emphasize the prevalent white beauty standards of the 60s. I designed the right poster with images of black women. Three bold letters spell ‘BLK’ to compliment the images. Lastly, a quote from Whoopi Goldberg ties the posters together.
A key aspect of this project was learning how to communicate a message. How can I emphasize the importance of diversity in the cosmetic industry? I learned that through researching and iterating the design.
