Laws of Simplicity is a 100-page black and white book dedicated to John Maeda, author of The Laws of Simplicity. The purpose was to design this book as a system that applies the principles of design such as hierarchy and Gestalt principles, which are covered in The Laws of Simplicity Of course, this book was designed with simplicity in mind.

Before jumping into Indesign, I outlined the book, identifying pull quotes and ranking design elements from the most to least important. Type pairings were made after the outline. I began my rough designs of how the book would flow. The chapter number was the most important part of indicating the section of the book. Black spreads were used sparingly to highlight the beginning and end of the book.

The biggest takeaway for me was understanding design consistency and learning how to design book sequences. Also, I learned that experimenting with grids can make a difference in creating a dynamic book flow.

Each section was intentionally designed so that the reader could distinguish what section they were in.
